Travel Information

The ASI will take place from Monday 23 May 2005 (arrival day Sunday 22 May) to Friday 3 June 2005 (departure day either Friday 3 June afternoon or Saturday 4 June) at the Ecoresort Le Sirene'. The hotel is located 4 km south of Gallipoli (Lecce), by the sea. We will arrange special transportation from/to the airport on the arrival and departure days. We will advise you about it nearer the time.

Note that NATO does not take any health or accident insurance for your participation in the meeting: such insurance, if you wish to have it, is your personal responsibility.
  • Arriving By plane
The closest airport is Brindisi: a shuttle bus service to Lecce is available. Tickets are sold in the airport Tobacco shop (please specify "Lecce" as your destination). If you miss the shuttle you can use a (very expensive) taxi service. Here is a link for the itinerary from Brindisi to Gallipoli (distance 88 km [55 miles]).
Although we encourage you to fly to Brindisi, because of its closer distance to the hotel location, you may also want to check the flight fares to the Bari airport. From there, there is no shuttle bus to Lecce; however there is a rather frequent connection by train. Here is a link for the itinerary from Bari to Gallipoli (distance 197 km [123 miles]).
For flights you may want to check:
    www.alitalia.it: to Brindisi and Bari
www.ryanair.com: to Brindisi and Bari from London Stansted
    www.alpieagles.com: to Brindisi from Venice
    www.britishairways.com: to Bari
  • By train
The handiest railway station is Lecce.
    For the national railway: www.trenitalia.it
There is also a regional train connecting Lecce to Gallipoli railway station (journey time about one hour)
For the local railway (Ferrovie del Sud-Est), dowload the timetable here or visit: www.fseonline.it
  • By car
People arriving by car from Brindisi should take the 612 motorway to Lecce (see the map): before entering Lecce they should take the Gallipoli exit and follow the 101 motorway to Gallipoli. Once in Gallipoli, take the coast road leading to the south (S.Maria di Leuca). At about 4 km south of Gallipoli, you will find the Ecoresort Le Sirene' (phone number 0833 202536).
If you are coming by car from Rome, follow directions in the map to Brindisi and then follow same as above.
(Download pdf file with directions - this is only in - simple - Italian for now)

  • By bus from Rome or Naples
There is a good bus service from Naples to Lecce and from Rome to Lecce/Gallipoli (and back). Here you will find the bus timetable (and ticket costs) from/to Rome (Sita-Marozzi service) and from/to Naples (Miccolis service). The bus stop in Rome is in Tiburtina Station where there is also the Sita-Marozzi ticket counter. The bus ticket Rome-Gallipoli-Rome (return ticket) is about EUR 72. There are two buses a day:
    • 11.00 am Rome - 8.10 pm Gallipoli
    • 11.59 pm Rome - 9.30 am Gallipoli.
In Naples the bus stop is in Garibaldi square and tickets are sold at the bar Ettore (phone nr. +39 081 200380).

  • Taxi fares (approximate)
    Taxi fares are about:
    • From Brindisi airport to Hotel Le Sirene': 100 EURO
    • From Lecce to Hotel Le Sirene': 60 EURO
